McGill University, Institute of Parasitology

McGill University is one of Canada’s leading universities and its Institute of Parasitology is recognized internationally for its research into infectious parasitic diseases. It is one of the few centers dedicated to investigating this topic. McGill is widely known as the most research intensive university in Canada.

The Institute of Parasitology is collaborating with Upstream to test the second generation of drug candidates for the potential treatment of the tropical diseases leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis (African sleeping sickness) and malaria. Testing will be directed by Dr. Armando Jardim, who has published an extensive body of research covering the identification and characterization of parasite drug targets, including leishmaniasis.

Lomonosov Moscow State University is one of Europe’s leading educational and research institutions with a world-class chemistry department. Upstream will be working in collaboration with the Combinatorial Chemistry Center of the Chemistry Department for the chemical synthesis of novel compounds that Upstream intends to test for efficacy and toxicity against tropical parasitic diseases, including malaria, leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis, or African sleeping sickness, as well as for cancer indications.

The Combinatorial Chemistry Center has agreed to apply its expertise to manufacture designer drug candidates for Upstream’s in vitro and in vivo preclinical testing against these tropical parasitic diseases.  

Makerere University

Makerere University is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s oldest most prestigious institutions of higher learning. It is among the largest universities in East and Central Africa, with a student population of over 30,000 undergraduate and 3,000 postgraduate students. Makerere University consists of 22 faculties, institutes and schools and is an active center of research. Makerere University is the home of the most prestigious Medical School on the continent of Africa, drawing students and professors from around the globe.  Makerere University was originally established as the University of East Africa in 1963, and became an independent national university of the Republic of Uganda in 1970.

Makerere University will be collaborating with Upstream for in vitro and in vivo testing of compounds, as well as being a partner for Upstream’s proposed clinical trials in Africa.

Provincial Laboratory for Public Health (ProvLab)
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Founded in 1907, ProvLab belongs to a network of federal and provincial public health laboratories called the Canadian Public Health Laboratory Network (CPHLN). ProvLab supports Alberta’s hospitals, health system and government agencies with its laboratory-based surveillance, diagnostics and research. Internationally recognized for laboratory excellence, ProvLab maintains accreditation from the foremost inspection agencies designed to evaluate the quality of laboratory services. ProvLab is the only public health laboratory in Canada to simultaneously hold certificates from the following agencies: College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, College of American Pathologists' , Canadian Association of Environmental Analytical Laboratories, and the American Association of Tissue Banks.

ProvLab has been working in collaboration with Upstream on in vitro testing of Upstream’s novel compounds for the treatment of Malaria.
